Starting a web site for free

(List updated September 2011) I am often asked “How can I start my own web site without any web design knowledge and without any money whatsoever?”
I know it can be hard to get started sometimes and not everyone wants to put money down just to get a simple site. So I have listed a few resources to help you get started.

Option 1) Get a free blog

Probably the most well known of the lot is Google’s Blogger.com. Starting your own site (blog) there is very easy. No mucking around with designs (unless you want to that is) it’s just a matter of a few clicks of your mouse button and away you go.

Thoughts.com Forums – Click on “blogs” in the navbar to open a free blog account.
Xanga – Another blog and photo sharing site.
i.ph – This blog provider boasts of very refined privacy settings with many options.
You can start a free WordPress blog on WordPress.com

Option 2) Use a free site builder
Wix – Flash web site creator.
Yola – Easy to use, lots of templates.
You can create a website or online store with Webs.com.
Other:
With FaceItPages you can easily create a great-looking, lead-generating, cost-effective Facebook Business Page.

Hey , you have a very good blog, its excellent information in its field. You have done a great job, keep doing it for to help, people like Myself.

  14. I had no, nada, zero knowledge of web site design, code, etc. I purchased MicroSoft Front Page 2003 (wow, 6 years ago). It is so very easy to learn. It is a point and shoot program. I have now designed and webmaster 15 sites with more in the works. Remember: All the flash and trick stuff, all the bells and whistles are useless if your visitors can’t navigate the site or have old and slow dial up. Start simple and stay that way.
    Good luck to you

Hi, I want to start a business on the internet and I was looking for information on how to get a free website and that is how I came across this post. Thank you for the information, I has really been useful!

  22. web designer says:

Hey, can I recommend that you look into some useful articles I have found at deepspacedesign.co.uk, very interesting.

  23. I would definitely recommend that as soon as you get your free site up and running that you switch to a paid domain name! Having your own domain name is far more secure and looks far more professional in the long run! :D

  24. Very interesting…
I think we should have a good web developer first to develop our site. Doing SEO with that site will earn us a great money in future.

Good list, I like wordpress.com free sites.

  27. jess says:

is there anymore website that could be better than this or no??

  28. I had no idea about how these sites were great. Thanks for sharing. Anyway, I do plan to make my own site but to try it first at a free blog. Good thing these sites were listed here. Now, I can make an experiment out of it before buying a domain. This really helps. Thanks a lot!

  29. Excellent write up on beginners website building guides and places to find resourceful help in creating webpages from scratch with very little knowledge on the process. I myself am a beginning web-designer. I mainly use the free systems right now to design my sites focusing on clean functionality of a site along with making sure the site is easy to navigate through. i think some sites want to focus on the fancy stuff and forget about keeping the visitors to the site!

    • suz says:

Can the site be created on a PC and then maintained and updated through the phone? Or does it definitely have to be created through the phone as well?

Once you have exhausted your free options, you should consider working on a paid environment. This one I liked a lot at http://www.easywebcontent.com. small learning curve and you have a lot of control over your templates and content; It’s a really nice system. It starts you as a free trial; yes long-term its paid but there are advantages to paid systems that outweigh free builders. Aside from being more stable and constantly reinvested into, so many of the free builders get abused with spam, blocked, etc.. Last I head wix had their facebook pages blocked for spam.

  34. Vinla says:

I have to learn more about wordpress because I am working on my Web Graphic Design Blog site with wordpress. I just explore myself and just know little amount.
Please someone can inspire me to enhance knowledge? Thanks!

  35. Greg says:

I realize that the whole topic is starting a website for free. I would caution that before starting that free website, you figure out why you are building one in the first place. If it has anything to do with business, I would suggest buying your own domain name and getting web hosting, so that you have control.

Even when making a website for personal reasons, a website is a valuable asset, and if the free website goes under or stops being free, all that content can disappear in a flash.

I did a video interview with a web developer if you wanted to find out more at http://www.smallbusinessdoer.com/starting-a-website/.

  36. Great tips, thanks for sharing!
